Question 1

Which Red Hat certification should I start with?

Accepted Answer

Start with the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), exam code EX200. This foundational, performance-based exam tests hands-on Linux administration skills in 2.5-3 hours. There are no prerequisites, but 6+ months of experience or courses RH124/RH134 are recommended. Cost is $500 USD.

Question 2

Do Red Hat certifications expire?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Red Hat certifications are valid for 3 years from the date earned. To renew, you can retake your highest-level exam, level up (earn a higher certification), or advance (earn a new Specialist/Architect credential, which extends all lower-tier certs). Expired certifications must be earned again from scratch.

Question 3

Are Red Hat certification exams online proctored?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Red Hat exams can be taken remotely via online proctoring or at a Red Hat testing center. All exams are 100% hands-on and performance-based — you complete real tasks on live systems. Remote exams require a webcam, microphone, and a quiet workspace. A proctor monitors via webcam for the entire duration.

Question 4

What is the passing score and format for Red Hat exams?

Accepted Answer

Red Hat exams are 100% hands-on (no multiple-choice). You complete real-world tasks on a live RHEL system. Passing requires approximately 70% of tasks completed correctly. RHCSA (EX200) is 2.5 hours, RHCE (EX294) is 4 hours. Results are reported as pass/fail based on task completion within the time limit.

Question 5

How much do Red Hat certification exams cost?

Accepted Answer

The standard list price for a Red Hat exam is $500 USD per attempt. Prices may vary slightly by region. Red Hat provides one free second attempt for every paid first attempt on the same exam. The Red Hat Learning Subscription Standard ($5,500/yr) includes 5 exam attempts with 5 retakes.

Question 6

What is the retake policy for Red Hat exams?

Accepted Answer

Red Hat provides one free retake for every paid first attempt. After a first failed attempt, you can schedule the free retake immediately with no waiting period. After a second failure, a waiting period applies and subsequent attempts require a new paid registration ($500 each). Free retakes must be used within 1 year of original purchase.

Question 7

What is the hardest Red Hat certification?

Accepted Answer

The Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) is the most demanding, requiring an RHCE certification plus 5 Specialist certifications in a single concentration (e.g., Cloud, DevOps, Application Development). Each specialist exam is $500 and is a rigorous performance-based test. The entire RHCA journey typically takes 2-3 years and costs $3,000+ in exams alone.
